Vagharshak (Vago) Ohanyan

Vagharshak (Vago) Ohanyan is an accomplished opera singer, conductor, pianist, and educator. He holds a Doctorate of Arts Ed. and a MA in Vocal Performance from the Armenian State Conservatory, and a Certificate from the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Maestro Daniel Ferro. His career is marked by significant achievements and contributions to the arts. 

Mr. Ohanyan’s rich and varied career is highlighted by a range of notable performances. Mr. Ohanyan performed in New York in a 2007 concert production of Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci,” singing the role of Silvio. He debuted at the New York City Opera as Sid in Puccini’s “La Fanciulla Del West.” He participated with Virtuosi Moskow, conducted by Vladimir Spivakov, to sing the “Moscow” Cantata at Carnegie Hall and at the Tanglewood Festival with the Russian American Youth Orchestra and Chorus of New York. He performed as a soloist in Fauré’s and Mozart’s “Requiem,” and as Sharpless in “Madame Butterfly.”  with the Armenian Philharmonic. He recorded a CD of Puccini’s opera “Il Tabarro” with Maestro Carlos Luis Garcia.

As a guest soloist with the Bolshoi Theater (Moscow), he performed with the American Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leon Botstein in Rachmaninoff’s “Francesca Da Rimini” at David Geffen Hall. Other career highlights include solo recitals with the Boston Chamber Orchestra, the Rhode Island Chorale, and a baritone solo in Duruflé’s “Requiem” with the Plymouth Choir and Orchestra at Plymouth Church. He performed at Carnegie Hall with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Tchaikovsky Rediscoveries Festival at Bard College and Trinity Church.

Mr. Ohanyan is the principal conductor of the National Chorale’s NYC educational programs. He teaches advanced vocal classes and conducts the concert choir at the Professional Performing Arts School in New York City. In addition, Mr. Ohanyan was invited by the Armenian State Opera House to give a masterclass for its young artist program.

He co-founded the 2009 Youth Talent Music Competition at Carnegie Hall and serves as a jury member in many prestigious international vocal competitions. Mr. Ohanyan has been honored with the Naregatsi Medal from the Government of Armenia, the highest award for Education and dedication to the Arts, and a Diploma Professor Honoris from Haybusak International University.
