Jacques Schwarz

Jacques Schwarz made his debut on stage in a production of Retour d’Ulysse by Monteverdi under the direction of Jean Claude Malgoire in 1982 at l’Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing.

Under the tutelage of Lorraine Nubar and Gabriel Bacquier, Mr. Schwarz graduated from C.N.S.M. in Paris in 1987. He completed his studies at the Hochschule in Köln in the studio of Professor Rudolf Bautz, and regularly participated in master classes of Daniel Ferro at the Fondation Royaumont in France, and Kurt Moll in Germany. He continues Daniel’s Legacy each year by returning to teach at the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program in Greve in Chianti, Italy.

In 1988 Mr. Schwarz became a member of the Opera Studio in Köln. Back in France, he began at l’Ecole d’Art lyrique of l’Opéra de Paris, under the direction of Michel Sénéchal, as well as in the Studio of Versailles Opéra, with Rachel Yakar and René Jacobs. From 1994 to 1996, Mr. Schwarz was permanent member of l’Opéra de Gelsenkirchen in Germany, where he appeared in the roles of Waldner in “Arabella” by Richard Strauss, as Landgraf in “Tannhäuser” by Richard Wagner, and as Osmin in “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” by Mozart.

Mr. Schwarz performed regularly in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, in recitals of melodies, lieder, and oratorio concerts. His qualities and presence of his rich bass voice allowed him to undertake the most diverse genres, portraying Sarastro, Arkel, Hunding, l’Ermite in Freischütz, the Commendatore, Osmin and Basilio. He participated in numerous premiere works of contemporary music under the direction of composers Marius Constant, Franco Donatoni, Michel Decoust, Isabelle Aboulker, Charles Chaynes, Elisabeth Sikora, Rolf Liebermann, and Peter Eötvös. Schwarz also sang in Eötvös’s opera Le balcon at l’Opéra de Bordeaux. Mr. Schwarz has sung under the baton of Sir John Pritchard, James Conlon, Manuel Rosenthal, Jean Claude Malgoire, E. Inbal, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Alberto Zedda, Kwame Ryan.

In 1996, he considered it essential to pass on artistic expertise. He decided to devote himself to teaching. Holder of the Certificat d’Aptitude aux fonctions de Professeur de Chant, he was named to the Conservatoire de Bayonne Côte Basque from 1996 to 2002, then at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux from 1998 through 2007. In 2008, Mr. Schwarz was invited to give a master class at the Hochschule in Hannover; then continued as professor in the university from 2008 to 2014.


From 2003 to present, he has been voice professor at the Conservatoire de Toulouse, as well as at l’Institut Supérieur des Arts de Toulouse (ISDAT).
